6 Findings from the Houzz & Home Study

Houzz, the online platform for home remodeling and design, has released its annual "Houzz & Home" study, the largest available survey of residential remodeling, building and decorating activity. The results of the 2015 report, which examine home design trends of the past year, hold some interesting insights for pool and spa pros. Here's a quick rundown of the most interesting findings:

1. The Millennials Are Here
Homeowning millennials are putting their money into their homes — and as a matter of fact, they were just as likely to renovate their home as other age groups. While only one in 10 homeowners falls in the 25-34 age bracket, it's clear they take their surroundings seriously, as 62% of millennial homeowners said they renovated their home in 2014.

2. Outdoor Renovations are Popular…
Three in five homeowners surveyed by Houzz made upgrades to their outdoor spaces or structures, like the pool or spa.

3. …Especially in the West and South
Looking closer at that 62 percent of homeowners who renovated their outdoor space, it's no surprise to see that outdoor projects were especially popular among homeowners in the Western and Southern regions of the country. Take a look at the map on the right to see more detail on the rate by state.

4. All About Decks
Of outdoor upgrades, landscaping of garden beds or borders was the most common outdoor project. Looking at outdoor structure upgrades in particular, patios, terraces and/or attached decks were the most popular. Pergolas, arbors, gazebos, etc. came in at 5 percent. Pools came in at 2 percent. A possible silver lining: the data supports the theory that businesses who specialize in the overall backyard experience — landscape design, decks as well as pool and spas — will flourish.

5. Finding Good Help is Hard
When asked about the challenges of home renovation projects, Baby Boomers said finding the right service provider was the top hurdle. (For the younger crowd, it was all about staying on budget.) It serves as yet another reminder that it's important to establish trust with potential customers to win them over.

6. Reviews are Important
When choosing a service provider, good reviews and recommendations are the No. 1 factor for millennials at 49 percent. However, as you reach the Gen X-ers and Baby Boomers, that number falls.
