For Someone Special

Hoping to build the dream pool they had always wanted, a couple in Huntsville, Ala., hired Johnson Pools and Spas to fix and renovate their decrepit pool. "The decks had settled, the return lines were broken, the main drain lines were broken, and the Polaris line was broken. It was basically sort of a disaster," says builder Tommy Johnson.

After nine months of planning and designing, Johnson Pools and Spas started the renovation Dec. 1, 2005, but, tragically, 10 days later, the husband died in a plane crash. However, the wife wanted to finish the project as a memorial to her husband.

So Johnson tore everything out, down to the 20-by-40foot concrete pool shell, and rebuilt the space. Flanked by six Crystal Fountain's Fyrefly deck jets and Alabama limestone coping, the pool has black granite at the waterline and special features at both ends. On one end is a poured-in-place concrete spa covered with a steel and stucco dome with a chandelier inside. Three sheeting waterfalls also flow into the pool at this end.

On the other side and raised a few feet is a fountain highlighted by four more Fireflies and a bronze statue the couple had purchased years ago while on vacation. Around the pool, white travertine tile with black granite insets gives this space a formal look and helps it blend with the Spanish-style stucco home next to it. "It's really a tribute to her and his life," says Johnson.
