Hill Country Haven

Creating a vanishing edge like this that sits 16 feet above grade may be a huge challenge to some builders, but not to Tib Scallon, owner of Scallon Custom Pools in Austin, Texas. "Most people think of Texas as flat area, but we're actually in a real hilly, pretty area," says Scallon. "And almost every project we do has some sort of vanishing edge on it. So when we build a pool off the edge of a hill, we've done it so many times, it's really no big deal, and so we're really timely, too."

Six beams, including one that runs the whole length of the 75-foot vanishing edge, support this curved pool, plus a spa and fountain, which both feature glass tile. On the back side of the edge, dry-stacked stone covers the exterior of the basin and the side walls of the pool. The Pennsylvania flagstone chosen for the decking not only complements the color of the home, but its straight edges help create the elegant setting the homeowners wanted. The onyx Pebble Technology finish in the pool enhances this sophisticated look, as well.

The homeowners also asked for something dramatic that mirrored the existing patio, and the negative edge, perched above Barton Creek, certainly accomplishes that. Overall, the poolscape's understated beauty gives it the distinctive, high-end look that any pool in a neighborhood of milliondollar homes should have.
