A Huge Untapped Market Exists for Men-Only Yoga Classes
On a perfect November Saturday afternoon when they could have been pumping iron at the gym or hanging out with friends over a couple of pale ales, half a dozen men slipped through the back entrance to a spartan yoga studio on the main drag of Westmont in Camden County. They were there, bravely and voluntarily, to spend two hours doing yoga. Never mind that the ancient Indian practice linking breath, body, and spirit was developed and taught by men. In America, yoga is a woman's domain.

School Cancels Remaining Football Games Following Racist Vandalism
LUNENBURG — School Superintendent Loxi Jo Calmes announced Monday that all remaining games for the Lunenburg High School football team — including the popular Thanksgiving game Nov. 27 against St. Bernard's High School in Fitchburg — have been forfeited in the wake of an alleged racist hate crime targeting a young player. The Lunenburg team is now the focus in racial graffiti discovered Friday morning spray-painted on the house of 13-year-old Lunenburg player Isaac A. Phillips, who alleges wrongdoing by teammates. Ms. Calmes thanked the community for attending a vigil Sunday night and for supporting Isaac and his family who were the targets of an "act of hate." She said the district will continue to make its resources available to assist the family.

Football Gets Focus, but Concussions Impact Girls More Than Boys
When former North County High School softball player Alicia Cooke was hit in the head during pre-game warm-ups in the spring of 2012, she didn't know she had a concussion. The Glen Burnie resident, now a freshman at Anne Arundel Community College, played in the Knights' game that day and practiced the following afternoon. Then the headaches became too much to bear. Cooke also developed slurred speech, memory loss and concentration problems, she said. After seeing specialists at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Cooke was diagnosed with a concussion and was home-schooled for the rest of the school year. She missed the rest of the softball season, too, as she dealt with the effects of her injury.

AcroYoga Combines Acrobatics, Gymnastics, Yoga - and Trust
Like a squadron of determined superheroes soaring to the rescue, four women leaned forward in a row, mid-air, their bodies parallel to the floor, arms locked to their sides. They were flying-bold, powerful, on top of the world. And on top of their partners' feet, which might not be the way superheroes do it, unless of course they're taking an AcroYoga class.

Atlanta Braves Move: Keeping Score in Dollars
Business, like baseball, is a numbers game. So if you want to see the Braves' move the way they see it, numbers are key. Let's start with the fact that in business terms, the Braves have been doing quite well at Turner Field. Attendance this year grew by an average of almost 1,600 fans per game, and annual attendance was higher than at any point since 2007, the year the team was purchased by Liberty Media. As estimated by Forbes magazine, the value of the Braves franchise has also jumped from $405 million in 2006 to $629 million today. That's a 55 percent increase. The Dow Jones Industrial Average may have set a record high this week, but since 2006 it has grown by a mere 30 percent.

Stadium Projects Could Bring 15,000 Construction Jobs to Atlanta
Simultaneous stadium construction by Atlanta's two top sports franchises will create a temporary but powerful stimulus for what has been one of the region's worst-hit industries --- commercial construction. With a combined cost of nearly $2 billion, those huge projects --- the Falcons downtown and the Braves in Cobb County --- could help shift the larger economic recovery and job market into a higher gear. Together, the two projects are expected to create nearly 15,000 construction jobs from next year to 2017. It is enough to get Donald Perry dreaming of home.

Clock Malfunction Leaves HS Field Hockey Team Feeling Slighted
It's not about winning and losing for coach Sue Persichetti and the Gwynedd Mercy field hockey team. It's about fairness. What happened to the Monarchs in their PIAA state Class AA semifinal, a 3-1 loss to Wyoming Seminary on Nov. 12, wasn't fair, Persichetti says, and the second-year head coach is not backing down from the fight. It all started when Wyoming Seminary was awarded a penalty stroke during the second half of the game, held at Emmaus High School, and scored to go up by 3-1.

Call for Hit Counts in Youth Football
If you could prevent shoulder and elbow injuries in baseball pitchers by making one simple change, would you? Hopefully, if you re the parent or coach of a young pitcher, your answer is yes. Through years of research, we generally know the risk of shoulder and elbow injuries increases dramatically when kids pitch too much too many pitches and innings without enough rest. That research led to the adoption of pitch counts. Could a similar injury prevention strategy work in youth football? Instead of pitch counts to protect young arms, consider hit counts to protect kids brains.

Blog: Defending "The Slowest Generation"
Did you see Helliker has now written a follow-up in the WSJ which he talks about his first article? He writes that the young people wrote in blasting him, 'But my fellow old-timers applauded it, saying that the rise of a medal-for-everyone culture has dulled this country's competitive edge.' Slow? Fast? Young? Old? The only thing that is definitive for me now is that Helliker is a total ass who is not helping running or journalism.

Bill Boosts Native American Mascot Defense
There is an excellent piece from the Indian Mascot and Logo Task Force that explains why Indian imagery in sports is not honorable and harmful. I cannot attach the link but you can find it at the www.indianmascots.com under the 'education' tab, select 'materials' and 'common themes.'

Bill Boosts Native American Mascot Defense
The current law makes sure everyone has a voice, which is the number one priority of a 'democratic society.' Sometimes when everyone has a VOTE, it actually limits many people from having a VOICE. Current law allows people to express their voice before a vote is had, instead of the other way around - which is why I feel a change would be detrimental. If it turns out the name is felt to be an honoring one, it will stick. And 'Sweetheart'? Really??? Your condescending attitude doesn't really open a dialogue, does it!

Bill Boosts Native American Mascot Defense
I'm still trying to understand why Chief Illiniwek at the University of Illinois was removed...Great pride and nothing but respect for the Chief was my experience at Illinois. I don't understand how the symbol of a great Chief was considered culturally insensitive to Native Americans. If anyone has any thoughts, please speak up.
