In response to the North Carolina Legionnaires outbreak, which has been linked to untreated hot tub displays at the state fair last fall, both the CDC and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services have released guidelines for treating water in temporary event displays.

In North Carolina health officials released, “Legionellosis Risk Mitigation for Temporary Event Vendors.” In addition to hot tubs, the document also includes recommendations for whirlpool baths, display fountains and misting/cooling systems.

The CDC release, “Hot Tub Displays and Legionella Risk – Guidance for Environmental and Public Health Practitioners” offers useful background information about Legionella along with treatment recommendations for hot tub owners and operators.

Both agencies strongly recommend maintaining proper sanitizer levels in displays containing water.
