Edging Toward Paradise

Juan Roca, owner of pool builder AQUART in Nicoya, Costa Rica, says for this project in Flamingo Beach, his clients, naturally, wanted to take advantage of the spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean, but they also wanted a big mass of water so it would feel as though the ocean was immediately beyond their windows.

The free-form gunite pool with a 50-foot vanishing edge certainly optimizes the view, and the pool's dark plaster finish helps the man-made body of water blend nicely with the natural one in the distance. To further enhance its harmony with its environment, Roca designed the pool to match the curve of the bay.

He also used a special structural design to anchor the pool to the rock below it. And since the pool's hydraulics are set up so water moves slowly through big pipes, this smooth-as-glass water is what the homowners see all day long.
