The New Kid On the Block

Cailley Hammel Headshot

Cailley HammelIn a way, writing this column feels like peeking out from behind the curtain. I'm on next, and I know I have a tough act to follow. As the new associate editor at AQUA, it's my job to try and fill Barrett Kilmer's shoes after his 12-year tenure. But if you get to know me, and I certainly hope you will, you'll know I can't resist a challenge.

I'm brand new to the pool and spa industry. (I grew up with an aboveground pool, though, so I hope my summers of testing the pH, tinkering with the pump and toting gallons of treatment products give me a little cred.) However, Barrett's parting words to me were nothing but praise for the people he met in this industry. With that in mind, I'm excited to dive headfirst into things at AQUA. (Terrible pun intended.)

I may be new to the industry, but that's not to say we have nothing in common. I'm here because I, like many of you, followed the footsteps of those before me. Both my parents are wordsmiths, and as a matter of fact, my father is an editor at a trade magazine in another industry. I know what it's like to fall into the family business, so to speak, and I know what it's like to know you're doing what you were meant to do.

So what am I here to do? I'm here to help you learn more about the pool and spa industry and grow your business — to provide what you need to know and what you want to know. And if there's ever anything you'd like to see more of in AQUA, just drop me a line and I'll see what I can do. In the meantime, take a look at my first big feature, a story about semi-inground pools, and let me know what you think.

On that note, the show must go on. (And we know that because Freddie Mercury said so.) I'll be in New Orleans for PSP — if you see me at the show, come say hi. I'll be the short one asking all the questions.
