โ€˜Blue Mindโ€™: An Exploration of the Benefits of Being Near Water

Eric Herman Headshot

We all know that human beings have an innate love of water, but do we really know why? Is it that our bodies are comprised mostly of water, or is it because the earthโ€™s surface is nearly three quarters aquatic? Or is it something else?

In what should arguably be required reading for those of us in the aquatics industries, author Wallace J. Nichols, a marine biologist, offers a wonderfully comprehensive analysis of those questions in โ€œBlue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do." Itโ€™s a fascinating work that tackles the subject from a mostly scientific as well as cultural and psychological basis. Through his comprehensive analysis, which includes all types of bodies of water, from oceans, lakes and rivers, to swimming pools, fountains and even bathtubs, Nichols proffers the idea that being close to water makes us happier, calmer, mentally healthier and ultimately more successful in our personal relationships and business.

He believes that when we access the evolutionary urge for proximity to water, we are better able to realize our full potential. Ultimately, he argues that our love of water influences a surprising number of decisions, as well as our emotions and behavior, whether we realize it or not. He cites science as well as literature in making the case, which quickly becomes far more than informative but indeed truly inspiring. Nichols also explores practical issues, such as how property values increase based on water proximity and how vacation destinations almost always feature water of some kind.

One of the many sources Wallace cites is author W.H. Auden, who once wrote, โ€œThousands have lived without love, not one without water.โ€ For those of us whose careers depend on human beings love of water, "Blue Mind" is a seminal work that defines the relevance of what we do and perhaps most important, how bringing water into people's lives makes the world a better place.
