Look Ma, No Pumps

Millions of annual visitors to the spectacular fountains at Peterhof, outside St. Petersburg, Russia, are amazed by their artistic splendor. But pool builders who travel to the site are more impressed that the fountains use no pumps! Water pressure is developed solely from reservoirs at higher elevation.

It was this geologic feature — the ability to use higher elevation reservoirs to power the fountains — that drove the site selection. It’s not surprising when you think about it. If you were designing an enormous array of fountains in the early 1700s before the advent of modern water pumps, what else could you do?
